Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future: CHMRC's MRC Deactivation and New Direction

On June 12, 2014, California Health MRC (CHMRC) was founded to serve communities in times of crisis. What began as a volunteer-led Medical Reserve Corps unit grew into a force of 163 trained individuals ready to respond, support, and serve, in addition to employees. Together, we stood at the front lines during COVID-19, delivering vital services and emergency response efforts where they were needed most.

Now, over a decade later, CHMRC is entering a new chapter. We have formally deactivated our MRC unit, a thoughtful decision driven by evolving federal and state priorities and a strategic shift toward sustainable, long-term impact.
But our work is far from over.

A Legacy of Service

Throughout our MRC’s history, we led with compassion and action in the Solano County region to provide:

  • Over 27,925 vaccinations, 83,507 COVID-19 tests and 183,000 flu shots
  • 6,500 pounds of food distributed to Solano County
  • Logistics support for emergency shelters, pop-up clinics, and medical surge response
  • Dozens of first aid stations, vaccination events, and community health screenings
  • Targeted outreach to underserved populations, including field pop-up clinics and PPE distribution
  • Robust support for community health workers, communications coordination, and community education/health promotion efforts
  • Various first aid, CPR trainings and blood drives

Whether through disaster medical support or public health education, our team and volunteers helped meet the moment again and again.

Thank You to Our Volunteers

To our 163 volunteers, thank you. You answered the call during one of the most difficult public health challenges in recent memory. Your impact lives on in the communities you reached and the lives you touched.

What’s Next: Creating Healthier, More Resilient Communities

While the MRC chapter closes, CHMRC’s mission continues, stronger than ever.

Our focus remains committed to serving our communities through community-driven solutions, public health reporting, and cross-sector collaboration. We’ve recently launched The Bloomerang Network, a virtual space and tool where health leaders, community builders, and innovators can connect, share resources, and co-create solutions.

We’ve also adopted a new name to reflect this next chapter: Creating Healthier, More Resilient Communities. It’s more than a name – it’s a promise.

The work of building resilient, healthier communities continues, and we’re just getting started.
